How far we’ve come

Busselton River Resort - 2022

Some of the biggest improvements made are inside our guest rooms and the pool area. The 33 rooms had seen better days sporting blue carpet, floral curtains, a Yellow Pages, complete with a phone on the wall that rang nowhere. Our plan for the new rooms was to strip out and start again, but to maintain the original 80’s charm where possible.

 New mod cons include;

🔸Keyless door entry with keypad

🔸 Luxury bathroom amenities (which are re-fillable, allowing us to remove single use plastic products),

🔸Large work stations with power point access for remote workers

🔸Fast and reliable wifi

🔸Smart tv’s

🔸Premium bedding

The old school touches

🔸 Re-instating of the original motel breakfast hatches

🔸 Retaining the original terrazzo stone shower dividers in the bathrooms

🔸Designing a custom guest information brochure that you can hold in your hands…no screen needed (old school!).

Our pool had great bones and we could see that it could be brought back to its glory days as the social hot spot for guests to unwind and socialise with fellow travellers. As comedian, and self-confessed design nerd, Tim Ross writes (when it comes to the idea of going to a motel) "“Does it have a pool, Dad?” someone asks the familiar and all-important question. The answer is in the affirmative. A cheer goes up as you pull into the motel.” We knew we had to get the heart of the resort right. We chose to keep the original pool but rolled out an extensive landscaping plan to give more space to guests and evoke a palm springs vibe, worthy of spot on the Instagram grid!

The exterior of the buildings were tricky given the amount of brick. If we had a dollar for how many times we'd been told to render it all! But we felt it was an important part of the building's character. So we worked with the brick and instead painted roof tiles, introduced bright orange doors and coloured outdoor furniture, tidied up walkways, architraves, windows and the roads and parking bays. We also painted room numbers on car bays so you arrive with a designated parking spot out the front of your room. The little, but iconic, features of a motel.

As you can see we have come a long way but we're not done yet!
